Despite reports emerging early this week suggesting that NRL clubs were keen to swoop for the recently-crowned Golden Boot winner, St Helens’ head coach Justin Holbrook has confirmed that no club Down Under has contacted the Saints regarding taking winger Tommy Makinson to Australia.

”I haven’t seen the stories but no one has come knocking on my door from the NRL concerning Tommy,” Holbrook told the media, confirming that the four-time England international was on holiday in the country after his post-season international commitments. Speculation suggested that Makinson was drawing interest from Nathan Brown’s Newcastle Knights but the Red Vee’s Aussie boss added that Makinson will be returning from his time off in the coming days. “I am expecting him to return to training next week like the rest of our England players,” he explained.

Indeed, 2018 was superb season for Makinson where he was named in the Super League Dream Team, one of seven Saints to earn selection in the team of the year. A strong year domestically earned international recognition, Holbrook stating that “it is a reward for all his hard work and dedication at club level. ‘Tommy’s profile has rocked in recent weeks and well deserved. People didn’t know a lot about him but we did and understood what a fantastic player he is.”
