Shaun Lunt and Hull KR have confirmed that the Robins will face the Betfred Championship’s Toronto Wolfpack in January at the club’s home ground, KCOM Craven Park.

The match will be held on Saturday 19th January and will come six days after the club’s first pre-season friendly, a clash against the recently relegated Widnes Vikings, again at KR’s home ground. While Widnes will have a new look in their 2019 guise, Toronto have added to their squad but will look very similar to the team which fell agonisingly short in the Million Pound Game where defeat consigned them to a second campaign in the Championship.

The RFL awarded the hugely experienced Lunt a twelve month testimonial and the former Workington, Leeds and Huddersfield man was named KR’s captain ahead of the 2017 campaign. After being a key player in that promotion-winning season, Lunt’s participation in 2018 was besieged by injury issues and, in September, he found himself in hospital with what was described as a “serious infection.” While he was released after a few days, it is believed that he may not be fit to kick off the new season. However, with the character and experience he boasts, he will certainly be a huge part of KR’s preparations and the popular dummy-half will be sure to get a great reception and turnout for his testimonial match.

Sheens explained the decision to have just two pre-season matches. “We wanted to play our friendlies at home this year as it is good preparation for us having three home games out of our first four in the Super League,” he told the club’s official website.  “It also gives the fans an early chance to have a look at the boys and we are hoping to be able to field full strength sides for these games,” adding that “we think these two clubs should provide us with strong, professional opposition.” Contrary to previous years, the Robins won’t be facing cross-city rivals Hull FC in a pre-season friendly with the pair set to clash in Super League’s opening round in 2019.
