Huddersfield Giants have announced the signing of Fiji international Akuila Uate on a three-year deal from the NRL’s Manly Sea Eagles, the club have confirmed.
Uate, 31, was rumoured to be in discussions with the Giants earlier in the season but seemed to have gone cold. However, Simon Woolford’s team have managed to get the deal over the line and the winger or centre will be turning out in Huddersfield colours from 2019. With over two hundred NRL appearances to his name alongside over twenty international caps for both Australia and Fiji, Uate is a vastly experienced player and has played at the very top level throughout his career.
Head coach Woolford remarked of his delight at signing the powerful threequarter. “Akuila is a player with true class and pedigree having scored over 100 NRL tries and playing at the highest level internationally as well as in State of Origin, so we’re really excited to add him to our ranks for 2019,” he told the Giants’ website. “In Akuila Uate and Jermaine McGillvary we have two world class outstanding wingers who are capable of scoring some magnificent tries and making some big metres during games,” he added but, with Uate also capable of playing at centre, the Giants’ top try scorer in 2018 Darnell McIntosh may still be in the first team picture.
