U-Turn imminent at Headingley?

Reports in Australia have emerged overnight suggesting that Leeds Rhinos’ incoming head coach David Furner could be set to turn his back on the club he once played for in order to take the hot seat at South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Current Souths helmsman Anthony Seibold is being strongly linked with the Brisbane Broncos top job for 2020 with current England coach Wayne Bennett set to vacate that position at the end of 2019 and, with Seibold – formerly on the coaching staff at the Crusaders of Super League – seemingly unwilling to extend his contract with the Bunnies, speculation suggests that the powers that be could remove him from the role with assistant coach Furner taking the hotseat.

It would be a remarkable turnaround for Furner who, in September, was announced as the permanent successor to Brian McDermott, Super League’s most successful coach who departed the club in the summer. The former Canberra boss signed a lucrative three year deal with the Rhinos but it is believed that deal has a get-out clause in it should an NRL head coach role become a possibility.

Leeds Rhinos are to release a formal statement, set to include Furner’s own response, at some point through Wednesday but Gary Hetherington, the club’s chief executive, dismissed the reports and explained that he fully expected Furner to be with the West Yorkshiremen in 2019.
