Featherstone Rovers have announced that, ahead of the 2019 campaign, they are to relaunch their reserve team and that it will feature former Super League player Paul March as it’s head coach.

Currently a rugby league development officer with the LD Nutrition Stadium club, March will now oversee the club’s reserve team and, with experience as head coach with York City Knights, Keighley Cougars and Hunslet, the former Wakefield and Huddersfield player was understandably delighted. “Obviously it gives a pathway from my Under-14s ETP, to my Category 3 academy at NEW College Pontefract, to the reserves and then we’ll hopefully get a few players into the first team,” he explained. “We need to grow a greater pool of players for this club and having all the pathways through to the first team will allow that,” the 39-year-old added.

Growing a pool of players is of clear importance to the Betfred Championship club who, when failing to finish in the league’s top four to reach The Qualifiers, had to cut costs towards the end of the season, something which resulted in them being unable to field a full seventeen on a matchday.

The news comes the day after the club announced the departure of back-rower Connor Farrell to the newly promoted Bradford Bulls.
