Following Saturday night’s Grand Final, Wigan Warriors’ departing full-back Sam Tomkins has been hit with a one match penalty notice which, if accepted, will see the player forced to miss this week’s England match against France.
The ban comes following two incidents which many believed could – and should – have warranted at least a yellow card. While he was penalised for seeming to trip Warrington’s Bryson Goodwin, it was an incident where his knee made contact with Daryl Clark after sliding in to make a tackle which has seen him hit with the disciplinary charge. While he was unlikely to feature in the clash at Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday – Wayne Bennett wasn’t believed to be considering Wigan or Warrington players after their Grand Final exertions – the RFL confirmed today that the soon-to-be Catalans man could serve his ban by sitting out that fixture.
Tomkins’ team mate Thomas Leuluai has also been hit with a one match penalty notice after the match for dangerous contact. He, however, is able to serve that ban by not featuring in Wigan’s first pre-season friendly ahead of the 2019 season and, with that in mind, he is unlikely to challenge the charge.
