After missing the majority of this season with a neck injury, St Helens’ Alex Walmsley’s return to play has been delayed for a touch longer, the club announcing that the imposing forward faces at least another month on the sidelines.
That is despite returning recently to light training but it looks like the former Batley prop’s wish to return in time for a possible Grand Final appearance isn’t going to come to fruition now the England international has been told he needs more time to heal before resuming full contact rugby. “Alex got his scan last week and, whilst he is progressing well, they want to see some more bone healing before he can fully return,” Saints’ head coach Justin Holbrook told the media. “He is going great in training but it is in the hands of the specialist as it should be. The main thing is that as soon as he is well he will return. If it is this year it is a bonus. We always thought it would be but now we will find out in a few weeks.”
The news comes shortly after Holbrook’s men were stunned by Catalans in the Challenge Cup semi-final this weekend, ending their hopes of a domestic treble this year.
