Newcastle Thunder have announced the remarkable coup of Liam Finn’s signature with the Ireland international set to join the Betfred League One club for 2019.
With over 400 matches under his belt with clubs such as Featherstone, Castleford and Wakefield, the 34-year-old half back is spending the remaining part of 2018 with Widnes Vikings in The Qualifiers before joining Jason Payne’s Thunder. He will couple playing for Newcastle alongside a coaching role with Trinity and, having beaten off competition from the likes of Bradford for his signature, head coach Payne was understandably pleased. “I’m delighted we’ve been able to sign Liam for 2019, he is exactly what we have been after for a while,” he explained. “He is an experienced half who can get us around the field and control the game for us and there’s no better than that than Liam.”
Despite his advancing years, Finn was keen to continue his playing career and is, therefore, happy that the opportunity with Newcastle presented itself. “I’m not really ready to hang my boots up yet,” he said. “Jason asked if I would be interested in coming to Newcastle and he sold the club to me, what he thought I would bring and what we could do together next season. In terms of my role, I’ll be looking to help control the team, help other people to play well and understand their roles and then move people around the field so they don’t have an awful lot to think about when they are playing.”
