A tight Betfred League One match between North Wales Crusaders and Hunslet was decided on Sunday by this wrongfully allowed drop goal. With the game finely poised at 18-18 in the dying stages, referee Andy Sweet adjudged this drop goal attempt from Hunslet’s Joe Sanderson to have been successful. It proved to be the match winner.
Crusaders centre Alex Thompson took to twitter post-match to vent his frustration: “Underneath by about a metre. Worst decision I have ever been involved with since I played.”
The Welshmen’s coach Anthony Murray was equally angered by the decision. “It was clear to me and the players that the ball has dropped well below the bar and I think everyone at the ground saw it too. In all my years involved with the game I’ve never seen a decision like it and I’m puzzled as to how he could have got it so wrong at such an important stage of the game.”
