Reports have emerged which suggest Wigan Warriors’ marquee half back George Williams wanted to continue Catalans’ revolution for 2019.
Currently under contract until 2021, that hasn’t deterred the Dragons’ interest and, if they pull the move off, it would be no doubt a blow for the Cherry and Whites – even if the 23-year-old hasn’t been at his best in 2018. The extended deal – signed in early 2017 – was intended to deter interest from the NRL whilst also tying him down to marquee terms. The seven-time England international, however, may be on the move ahead of next season as Steve McNamara continues an ambitious recruitment drive.
Having signed the impressive Josh Drinkwater – initially on a short-term deal to the end of the season – and NRL import Kenny Edwards already, Sam Tomkins has penned a deal to join the club for 2019 and beyond, joining the likes of Lewis Tierney and Michael McIlorum in Catalans’ ex-Wigan ranks. Having seen a remarkable turnaround in form since their Challenge Cup victory over York in April, the Perpignan-based club have designs on achieving a top eight spot in 2018.
It seems, however, that 2019’s ambitions are much larger than just a top eight spot if their targeted acquisitions come off.
