Watkins set for long absence

Leeds’ 38-10 defeat at the hands of Castleford at Magic Weekend has come at a cost – and not just losing ground on their neighbours.

With Jack Walker, Nathaniel Peteru and Matt Parcell all picking up injuries, captain Kallum Watkins did also and now faces around eight months out of the game having suffered an ACL injury. Obviously, that rules him out of the rest of the season as well as England’s internationals against New Zealand in Denver and, at the end of the season, in Hull, Leeds and Liverpool.

Understandably gutted, Watkins told the Rhinos’ website that “I’m deeply disappointed to be missing the rest of the season.” With Leeds currently struggling for form, losing a player who is arguably one of the best in the competition is terrible news. They have, however, recalled Jimmy Keinhorst from his loan spell at Widnes and is highly likely to slot in at right centre for the foreseeable future.
