Bateman to leave?

Reports have emerged over the weekend suggesting that Wigan Warriors’ England forward John Bateman is set to depart Super League at the end of the season to move to the NRL.

Despite being under contract with the DW Stadium club for another year, the 24 year old has a clause in his current deal which allows him to join a club Down Under for a set fee. While a deal hasn’t yet been confirmed or signed, it is believed that Canberra Raiders are leading the race to sign him. That would see the former Bradford Bull join up with fellow England internationals Elliott Whitehead and Josh Hodgson.

Wigan had hoped to be able to keep Bateman at the club, most probably on marquee player terms, but the player has made clear his desire to test himself against the best in the NRL. The story comes fresh after he scored a try in the Warriors’ 38-10 victory over Warrington at Super League’s Magic Weekend to strengthen their hold on second spot in the competition.
