Catalans sign Tomkins

Following the announcement of his departure from the club at the end of the current campaign, Wigan Warriors’ full back Sam Tomkins has put pen to paper on a three year deal to join Catalans Dragons, beginning next season.

With his current deal expiring and the Cherry and Whites opting not to exercise their option to extend his deal, the 29 year old has signed a contract with the French team and, in turn, has confirmed a move which has been highly speculated in recent weeks. It is believed that Wigan, essentially, didn’t view Tomkins as worth the money he was being paid and will instead look towards John Bateman or Oliver Gildart as potential marquee players. Zak Hardaker is also now likely to sign for the club.

There are suggestions that, due to Catalans current lowly position, Tomkins may not complete the move or may have a get-out clause if the Frenchmen suffer relegation this season. There hasn’t been confirmation of this as of yet but the Wigan junior is excited about the challenge ahead. “Following my discussions with the club, it is clear that there are big ambitions for the future and I am happy to be part of the club project. I have worked with Steve McNamara for five years with the England team and I look forward to working with him again,” he said.

His coach for 2019 and beyond, McNamara, commented that Tomkins is “an outstanding leader, a decisive player and a formidable competitor. He has and continues to excel at the highest level. His winning culture and his incredible work ethic will have a big influence on our team and our club.”

Tomkins has also remarked that he is looking forward to moving his family to the South of France. He will join up with former Wigan teammates Michael McIlorum and Lewis Tierney for the Dragons.
