The ambitious Toronto Wolfpack have designs on a Super League future and, after four wins from their opening six Betfred Championship games, they have started their quest for a second successive promotion well.

Today has seen them confirm the signing of Salford Red Devils’ full back Gareth O’Brien and the acquisition of a player with strong Super League pedigree and ability is a massive signal of intent for Toronto – and a worrying sign for the Red Devils following their sale of 2017 Super League Dream Team nominee Ben Murdoch Masila.

O’Brien has joined up with the Canadians after they paid an undisclosed fee to the Lancashire club and, subject to RFL approval, the move will take place with immediate effect. It is expected that Toronto will sign further high profile players as their probable maiden Middle 8s campaign draws nearer as they aim to reach Super League at the first time of asking – a campaign which may well bring the full back up against his previous employers.

A club statement explained that initially O’Brien explained that he didn’t wish to leave Salford after Toronto’s first offer. However, the player’s representatives returned 24 hours later and requested permission to talk to the Wolfpack. Explaining their decision to allow the player permission, the statement further explained that they don’t wish “to retain a player who was not 100% committed to Salford Red Devils.”

O’Brien, the man who kept Salford in Super League after kicking a mammoth drop goal in 2016’s Million Pound Game, has made 65 appearances for the club since joining from rivals Warrington Wolves in 2015.
