Following his recent departure due to family reasons, former Super League star and New Zealand native Anthony Gelling is set to join a new club.
Earlier this winter, his girlfriend suffered an injury after being involved in a traffic collision and, in line with his wishes, 2016 Super League champions Wigan granted the Cook Island international an early release from his contract in order for him to be closer to his family due to the aforementioned news.
Although at the time Wigan’s head coach Shaun Wane stated that he wasn’t sure of what Gelling’s future held, it is now becoming clear that NRL team New Zealand Warriors are set to sign the 27 year old. According to the NZ herald, Gelling is set to sign a one year contract with the club after training with them for the last week.
The man himself recently published a blog post outlining his reasons for departing, adding that his gut feeling was telling him that another year at Wigan would be a struggle after initially returning for 2018 pre season training with the club. Gelling wrote, speaking of communicating with his girlfriend, that “another year of facetime and text messaging seemed like a mountain to climb and I was willing to try. But when I received news that she was seriously injured in a car accident it quickly put things in perspective.”
The centre played 114 times for Wigan and scored 52 tries in that time. He is set to link up with half back and fellow former teammate Blake Green at the Mount Smart Stadium club and will be hoping that his latest stint in the NRL is a successful one.
