Hornets in difficulty

Late in this off season, most teams would hope to be nearing readiness for the 2018 domestic campaign but that couldn’t be further from the truth for Betfred Championship team Rochdale Hornets.

This week has seen the club reveal their financial difficulties which have extended the club needing to ask their players to take a pay cut in both their weekly wages as well as in match fees. Discussions have been taking place in the last few days with both playing and coaching staff with the club hoping that the situation can shortly be resolved for all parties.

After worse than expected financial performance in 2017 as well as incorrect financial information before setting budgets sees a predicted deficit over the coming year, partially due to two main sponsors suffering financial difficulty over the last 18 months. This saw the club lose out on £20,000 from agreed sponsors and the lack of sponsorship opportunities taken up for the coming season hasn’t helped the situation.

Today has seen one of their key players depart the club amidst the financial difficulties with divisional rivals Batley Bulldogs taking advantage of the situation by finalising the transfer of centre Lewis Galbraith. After joining the club in 2016, the 23 year old scored 16 tries in 43 appearances for Rochdale and is said to be excited about the upcoming season with Batley after leaving the troubled Lancashire outfit.
