Savea to switch?

In an era where plenty of rugby league stars switch codes in a bid to chase greater glory and financial reward in rugby union, it is perhaps refreshing and intriguing to see that New Zealander Julian Savea is reportedly pondering a switch to the thirteen man code.

A man who is just three shy of his country’s rugby union try scoring record on 46, Savea hasn’t featured for the All Blacks since the British and Irish Lions tour back in the summer and, at 27, is considering changing to league, saying “it’s always been in the back of my mind.” As it stands, the flying winger is contracted to New Zealand Rugby Union until after the 2019 world cup but is now seemingly out of coach Steve Hansen’s future plans with Rieko Ioane – who won World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year – very much the man in favour. Indeed, the man nicknamed ‘the bus’ has said in the past that he hasn’t had cause to doubt his future in his current code but, now doubts have arisen, he realises the need to “weigh up the pros and cons and what’s best for my family.”

After being dropped this year, the Wellington born star would no doubt receive offers aplenty from NRL clubs were he to make himself available, New Zealand Warriors being perhaps the most likely, and it would be an incredible coup for rugby league as a sport to see such a high profile player take up the thirteen man code.
