McDermott in the mix?

Following the expiration of Wayne Bennett’s England coaching contract following the RLWC, Daryl Powell has already outlined his interest in pursuing the role on a part time basis alongside his Castleford Tigers duties were the position to become available – but now one of Powell’s coaching rivals in Super League has emerged as a man interested in taking the England national team forward.

The most successful coach in the Super League era, Leeds Rhinos’ head coach Brian McDermott, has thrown his hat into the ring, saying “If it becomes available and I get a phone call I’m certainly up for that.” He did, however, make effort to say that he wouldn’t want the role if it were to adversely affect his work with the 2017 Super League champions nor would he be distracted by it, stating “I won’t get veered off the track to chase the England job.”

McDermott himself coached at the recent RLWC where he led USA’s national team – a team he has coached part time alongside his Leeds duties – so has experience of international management unlike Powell and it will be very interesting to see which of the two, if either, are chosen to replace Bennett if he does leave the role in the coming months.
