With hundreds of rugby league players, both part and full time, in the midst of their pre season preparations for the upcoming campaign, it’s important to realise that it doesn’t just comprise of running around and, as York City Knights’ James Ford says, “there’s much more to it than that these days. There is a time and a place for physical work, obviously. You plan to improve the players’ physical qualities,” and the Kingstone Press League 1’s head coach goes on to suggest that it is vital that off season preparations include “improving skill and decision-making and building relationships.”

Perhaps this is why Wigan Warriors’ Shaun Wane has decided to take his charges to the picturesque surroundings of Snowdonia in Wales for the next phase of the Super League team’s preparation for 2018. In contrast to previous years where the Cherry and Whites have headed for the warmer climes of Florida, the Welsh mountains will play host to one of Super League’s top teams and the coaches will work in partnership with Red Bull to drill their players. Indeed, some of the countries best players will be enduring intense training sessions along with a variety of team-building exercises and, due to the wide variety of specialisms of athletes involved with Red Bull, players are supposedly on guard to expect the unexpected.

After a disappointing season which saw the Warriors fail to reach the end of season play offs, Wane will be hoping that this change from his usual off season preparations can inspire an upturn in fortunes for the 2016 Super League champions in the upcoming campaign.
